BMP to JPG

BMP files from Paint, old scanners and Windows apps are huge because they are uncompressed. Convert them to JPG to make them easy to email and upload.

How to use BMP to JPG

  1. 1Drop one or more BMP files into the box or click Choose files.
  2. 2Set the quality, or keep the default of 90.
  3. 3Optionally choose PNG instead, or turn on Shrink large images.
  4. 4Click Convert to JPG.
  5. 5Download each JPG or Download all (ZIP).

Why BMP files are so big

BMP stores every pixel uncompressed: a 1920 x 1080 screenshot is about 6 MB as BMP. The same image as JPG at quality 90 is usually 200 to 500 KB. That is why email services, websites and upload forms often reject BMP or hit size limits. The list shows the exact savings for each file.

Common BMP sources

BMP files often come from Microsoft Paint, older scanners and fax software, industrial cameras, medical and lab equipment exports, and screenshots saved by older Windows programs. They are fine for editing on one PC but awkward to share. Converting to JPG makes them small enough to email or upload, and every phone, browser and office program opens JPG. You can add a whole folder at once and download the results as one ZIP.

JPG or PNG?

Choose JPG for photos and scanned pictures. Choose PNG for screenshots, diagrams and images with text, where JPG can blur sharp edges; PNG is lossless and still much smaller than BMP. To shrink files further, try Compress Image.

Good to know

  • All files are converted in your browser and never uploaded.
  • 1, 4, 8, 16, 24 and 32-bit BMPs are supported by the browser decoder.
  • Alpha channels in 32-bit BMPs are not read by every browser; if your BMP has transparency, check the result.
