How to use GIF to PNG

  1. 1Drop one or more GIF files into the box or click Choose files.
  2. 2Under Animated GIFs choose First frame only or Every frame (ZIP).
  3. 3Keep Background on Transparent, or pick a solid color.
  4. 4Click Convert to PNG.
  5. 5Download the PNG, or the ZIP with all frames.

Extract frames from an animated GIF

Choose Every frame (ZIP) to save each frame as its own PNG, numbered in order (name-frame-01.png and so on). Many GIFs store only the part of each frame that changed; this tool rebuilds every frame the way a browser draws it, honoring frame offsets, transparency and disposal methods, so each PNG is a complete picture. Use it to pick a still for a thumbnail, edit single frames or make a sprite sheet.

Transparency and colors

Transparent GIF backgrounds stay transparent in the PNG. A GIF has at most 256 colors per frame, and PNG keeps those colors exactly, so there is no quality loss. If you need a smaller file for a photo-like GIF, use GIF to JPG. To turn an animation into a video instead, try GIF to MP4.

Privacy and limits

  • GIFs are decoded in your browser and never uploaded.
  • Long GIFs with hundreds of frames produce large ZIPs; Shrink large images reduces their size.
  • Frame timing is not stored in PNG files.

Common uses

Extracting frames is handy for choosing a still image for a thumbnail or social preview, for editing one frame of a meme or reaction GIF, for checking an animation frame by frame, and for turning a GIF into individual images you can rearrange in an editor. Converting just the first frame gives a static PNG for places that do not allow animated images, such as some profile picture uploads and documents.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get all frames from a GIF?

Choose Every frame (ZIP) under Animated GIFs, then convert. You get one PNG per frame inside a ZIP.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes. With Background set to Transparent, transparent pixels stay transparent in every PNG.

Why are frames full size and not cropped pieces?

Each frame is composited the way the animation plays, so you get exactly what you see at that moment instead of the small changed region stored in the file.

Is GIF to PNG lossless?

Yes. PNG stores the GIF colors exactly.

Can I convert several GIFs at once?

Yes. With Every frame on, Download all puts each GIF's frames in its own folder inside one ZIP.
