Compress PDF to 500KB

Bring a PDF under 500 KB for application uploads, school and visa paperwork, keeping photos as sharp as the limit allows.

The PDF will be at most 500,000 bytes.

Recommended. The file passes whether the upload form counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB.

How it works: first the file structure is cleaned up without any loss. If that is not enough, photos and scans inside the PDF are re-compressed, starting at high quality and stepping down only as far as needed, so text stays sharp and selectable. Only if that still does not fit (and you allow it) are pages turned into images, never below 72 DPI so text stays readable. Need a specific compression level instead of a size? Use Compress PDF.

How to use Compress PDF to 500KB

  1. 1Drop your PDF into the box. It is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
  2. 2Keep the maximum at 500KB, or type the exact limit from your form and pick KB or MB. Leave the KB counting on Safe unless you know the site uses 1,024 bytes.
  3. 3Optionally turn on Black and white for ID copies and certificates, or switch off page-to-image conversion if the text must stay selectable.
  4. 4Check the before and after sizes and flip through the page preview, comparing Compressed with Original.
  5. 5Click Download PDF and upload the file to your form.

Typical 500 KB uploads

A 500 KB limit is generous enough for multi-page documents: a full resume with a photo, a several-page transcript, a bank statement, a passport bio page together with a supporting letter, or a scanned application form. Most text-based PDFs exported from Word already fit; scans and PDFs full of photos usually do not.

Because the budget is larger, the tool can usually stay at the image re-compression step, so the text stays selectable and searchable, which some reviewers and applicant tracking systems rely on. To shrink without a fixed target, try Compress PDF.

How the PDF is squeezed under 500KB

The tool tries the gentlest method first and stops as soon as the file fits:

  1. Lossless cleanup. Duplicate fonts and images are merged, unused objects are dropped and the file is re-saved with compressed object streams. Nothing visible changes.
  2. Re-compressing images. Photos and scans inside the PDF are re-encoded as JPEG, starting at 85% quality and a 3000 px limit and stepping down only as far as needed. Text, lines and logos drawn as vectors are never touched, so they stay sharp and you can still select and search the text.
  3. Turning pages into images (optional). If that is still too big and you allow it, each page is rendered as a JPEG, starting at 200 DPI and going down to 72 DPI at the lowest. The page size stays the same, but the text can no longer be selected.

For scanned documents the images are the text, so they are never shrunk below about 72 DPI. If the target can't be reached above that floor, the tool tells you so and offers the smallest readable version instead of handing you an unreadable file.

KB or KiB: why the byte count matters

Upload forms disagree about what a kilobyte is. Some count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, others (and Windows Explorer) as 1,024 bytes. In the default Safe mode the limit is calculated with 1,000 bytes per KB, so the file passes either check. The exact byte count is shown with the result, so you can compare it with the number on the form.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a PDF smaller than 500 KB?

Drop the PDF here and keep 500 KB as the maximum. The tool starts with lossless cleanup and only lowers image quality as much as needed. Download the result when the size is shown under 500 KB.

Will my photos look worse?

Only as much as needed. Image quality is searched from 85% down, and resolution from 3000 px down, stopping at the first setting that fits, so a PDF just over the limit loses very little.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is read, compressed and previewed entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, which matters for ID cards, transcripts and tax documents.

Will the text still be selectable?

Yes in most cases. Images are re-compressed first and text is left as text. Only if that is not enough, and the option is on, are pages turned into images. The result card tells you which method was used.

What if the target is impossible?

You get a clear message and the smallest readable version, with its size. To go further, split the PDF into parts with Split PDF, remove pages you do not need with Delete PDF Pages, or turn on Black and white.

Can I open password-protected PDFs?

Yes. If the PDF needs a password to open, a password box appears. The password is only used in your browser to decrypt the file, and the compressed copy is saved without it.
