How to use Unzip Files
- 1Drop a ZIP file into the box or click to choose one. It opens right away; there is no extract button to press.
- 2Browse the folder tree, or type in the search box to find a file by name. Click the eye icon to preview images and text files.
- 3Untick anything you do not need. Folder checkboxes select or clear everything inside them.
- 4Click the download icon next to a file to save just that file, or use Download selected as ZIP. In Chrome and Edge you can also choose Extract to a folder to write the files straight to a folder on your computer.
- 5If the ZIP is password-protected, type the password and click Unlock first.
More than a basic unzipper
Most online unzip tools upload your archive to a server and hand back a flat list of links. This one reads the ZIP inside your browser, keeps the original folder structure, and lets you pick exactly what you want. Preview lets you check a photo, a README or a CSV before you download it, which saves time with large archives.
The same box also opens other archive types. The format is detected from the file itself, not the extension, so TAR, TAR.GZ, TGZ, TAR.XZ, GZ and 7z files work here too. RAR, BZ2 and CAB files open here as well.
Password-protected ZIP files
ZIP files protected with the classic ZIP password method (called ZipCrypto, used by Windows, macOS and 7-Zip by default) can be unlocked here: enter the password and the files become available. The password never leaves your browser tab.
ZIPs encrypted with AES-256 (an option in 7-Zip and WinZip) work too: enter the password and they are decrypted on your device.
Limits
- Files up to 1 GB can be opened. Very large archives depend on your device's memory; a desktop computer handles them better than a phone.
- Extract to a folder needs Chrome, Edge or another Chromium browser. Other browsers can download a ZIP of the selected files instead.
- Split archives (.z01, .zip.001) are not supported.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The ZIP is opened by JavaScript running in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it is safe for private documents.
Can I extract only one file from a ZIP?
Yes. Click the download icon next to any file to save just that file, or tick several files and download them together.
How do I unzip a file on iPhone or Android?
Open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap the box and pick the ZIP from Files or Downloads. Tap a file's download icon to save it to your phone.
Can I open a password-protected ZIP?
Yes. Type the password and press Unlock. Both classic ZIP encryption and AES-256 are supported.
Why are some file names garbled?
Some older Windows ZIP tools save names in a legacy code page instead of UTF-8. UtilityNest detects Korean (CP949) names and shows them correctly; for other legacy code pages the file contents are still correct, only the displayed name may show odd characters.
