How to use PNG to AVIF

  1. 1Drop your PNG images into the box or click Choose files.
  2. 2Set the quality; Balanced (80) works well for most images.
  3. 3Keep Background on Transparent, or fill transparent areas with a color.
  4. 4Click Convert to AVIF. The encoder loads on first use.
  5. 5Download the AVIF files individually or as a ZIP.

Big savings on PNG photos and screenshots

PNG is lossless, which makes photos and detailed screenshots saved as PNG very large. AVIF can cut those files by 80 to 95 percent while still looking the same at normal viewing size. It is a good fit for website hero images, blog screenshots and product images with transparent backgrounds.

Simple flat graphics such as small icons and logos are already tiny as PNG, and AVIF may not be smaller. The list shows the size change for every file so you can keep whichever is smaller. For crisp logos on a website, an SVG is often best.

Typical results: a 2 MB full-HD PNG screenshot often becomes 100 to 300 KB as AVIF at quality 80. Photos saved as PNG shrink even more.

Transparency

AVIF supports an alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges are kept. If you are placing the image on a known background color, you can fill transparency with that color instead, which often saves a little more space.

Good to know

  • The AVIF encoder (about 3.5 MB) downloads once, the first time you convert.
  • Large images take several seconds each; Shrink large images makes it faster.
  • Quality 90 and above keeps full color detail, useful for screenshots with small colored text.
  • Need broader compatibility? WebP is supported by even more apps.

Frequently asked questions

Does PNG to AVIF keep the transparent background?

Yes. With Background set to Transparent, which is the default here, the alpha channel is kept.

Is AVIF lossless like PNG?

No. This tool makes lossy AVIF files, which is where the big size savings come from. At quality 92 or higher the difference is very hard to see.

Why did one of my files get bigger?

Very small or very simple graphics compress extremely well as PNG already. In that case keep the PNG.

Will AVIF work on my website?

All current major browsers show AVIF. For older browsers, offer a PNG or JPG fallback with the picture element.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Encoding happens in your browser.

Can I resize while converting?

Yes. Turn on Shrink large images and set the longest side in pixels. This saves more space than lowering quality and makes encoding faster.
