How to use Create TAR or TAR.GZ
- 1Drop files into the box, or click Add a folder to include a folder and its subfolders.
- 2Type an archive name, or keep the suggested one.
- 3Choose .tar.gz (compressed, the usual choice) or .tar (no compression, fastest).
- 4Click Create and then Download.
When to use TAR instead of ZIP
TAR archives are the standard on Linux and macOS servers. Deployment scripts, Docker builds, backup tools and many upload forms for hosting panels expect a .tar.gz. Creating one on Windows normally means installing extra software; here it takes a few clicks.
What is stored
- Folder structure, using standard POSIX ustar format with GNU long-name records for very long paths.
- Each file's modified date.
- Folders get permission 755 and files 644, the usual defaults on Linux.
If two files share a name, the second is renamed to name (2).ext.
Privacy and limits
Archives are created in your browser; no file is uploaded. A .tar.gz is built in memory, so the total size you can archive depends on your device. File owners and executable permissions are not kept, because browsers do not expose them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a tar.gz file on Windows?
Add your files or folder here, choose .tar.gz and click Create. No command line or extra software is needed.
What is the difference between .tar and .tar.gz?
.tar bundles files without compressing them. .tar.gz is the same bundle compressed with GZIP, so it is smaller.
How do I extract the archive on Linux?
Run tar -xzf archive.tar.gz for a .tar.gz, or tar -xf archive.tar for a plain .tar.
Are executable permissions preserved?
No. Browsers do not give access to file permissions, so files are stored as 644. Run chmod +x after extracting if you need it.
Can I create a .tar.gz from a whole folder?
Yes. Click Add a folder, pick the folder, choose .tar.gz and click Create. Every subfolder is included with its structure.
Will the archive open on Windows?
Windows 11 opens .tar and .tar.gz files in File Explorer. On older versions use 7-Zip, or this site's Extract TAR tool.
