Why MP4 beats GIF
GIF compression is from 1987. A 5 MB GIF often becomes a few hundred kilobytes as H.264 MP4 with the same look, and video has millions of colors instead of 256. Instagram, TikTok and many forums don't accept GIF uploads at all but take MP4.
An MP4 doesn't loop by itself the way a GIF does, so the Repeat option plays your animation several times in one video. That helps with apps that need clips of at least a few seconds.
Timing, transparency and tiny GIFs
Each frame keeps its own delay from the GIF, so the video plays at the speed you saw in the browser (frame delays under 20 ms are treated as 100 ms, like browsers do). Video has no transparency, so transparent pixels get the background color you pick. Very small GIFs such as stickers are enlarged 2 to 4 times with sharp pixels, because many players and apps won't show a tiny video properly.
Going the other way? Use Video to GIF. Need a still frame? Try GIF to PNG.
Where to use the MP4
Instagram posts and Stories, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn and most messaging apps accept MP4 but either reject GIF or convert it with poor quality. Converting yourself lets you control the background and the number of loops. For a slideshow, PowerPoint and Google Slides play MP4 smoothly, while large GIFs can make a presentation heavy.
The output is H.264 MP4, which plays on every phone and computer.
Frequently asked questions
Will the MP4 be smaller than the GIF?
Almost always, often 5 to 10 times. Simple pixel-art GIFs with few colors may shrink less.
Does it use FFmpeg?
Most of the time it uses your browser's built-in audio and video engine. For formats the browser can't handle, it uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (GPL, source linked at /tvid/FFMPEG-NOTICE.txt), a one-time download of about 10 MB that then stays in your browser cache.
Does the video loop?
Most players and sites loop short videos automatically, but the file itself plays once. Use Repeat to put several loops into the video.
What happens to transparent parts?
They are filled with the background you choose, white or black.
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. The conversion happens in your browser.
What size will the video be?
The same width and height as the GIF, rounded to even numbers as H.264 requires. GIFs smaller than 240 pixels on the short side are enlarged 2 to 4 times with sharp pixels.
