Why iPhone photos are HEIC
iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because the format is about half the size of JPG at similar quality. The downside is compatibility: many Windows PCs, Android apps, websites and upload forms cannot open HEIC. Converting to JPG solves that.
How the conversion works
In Safari, which can read HEIC natively, photos are decoded by the browser itself. In Chrome, Edge and Firefox a HEIC decoder built into this page runs on your device instead. Either way your photos are never uploaded.
Decoding HEIC is heavy work. Expect about 1 to 3 seconds per photo on a typical computer, and longer on older phones. The progress bar shows how far along the batch is, and you can stop at any time and keep the photos already done.
Metadata and limits
- The converted files do not keep the original metadata, including GPS location, which is good for privacy when sharing.
- Live Photos and bursts are converted as a single still image.
- Some newer HEIC variants may not be supported by the in-browser decoder. Safari can usually open them.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to convert my iPhone photos here?
Yes. The photos are decoded and converted in your browser on your device. They are never uploaded to a server.
How many HEIC files can I convert at once?
Up to 100 per batch. Large batches take longer because HEIC decoding is demanding, and progress is shown for each file.
Does the JPG keep the date and location?
No. The converted JPG does not include the original metadata such as GPS location and camera details.
Should I choose JPG or PNG?
JPG for sharing and uploading, because the files are much smaller. PNG only if you need lossless files for editing.
How can I stop my iPhone from saving HEIC?
On the iPhone open Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG.
