How to use HWP to Text
- 1Drop one or more .hwp or .hwpx files into the box. The text appears as soon as each file is read.
- 2Choose Plain text or Markdown with tables as the output.
- 3Turn on Include headers and footers if you need page headers, or Keep empty lines to preserve the original spacing.
- 4Click Copy text, or Download .txt (.md for Markdown). With several files, switch between them with the tabs or use Download all as ZIP.
Fast, accurate text extraction
The tool reads the HWP 5.0 binary format (an OLE compound file with compressed body sections) and the HWPX zipped XML format directly in JavaScript, without uploading anything. Paragraph text, text boxes, footnotes and tables are extracted in document order. Fill-in placeholder hints from Hancom form fields are skipped, so you get the document's actual content.
Read-only distribution documents (배포용 문서) and old HWP 3.0 files are opened with the full rhwp rendering engine instead, which loads about 4 MB the first time.
Tables you can paste into Excel or feed to AI
In plain text, each table row becomes one line with cells separated by tabs, so pasting into Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers puts every value in its own cell. Choose Markdown with tables to get GitHub-style tables and blank lines between paragraphs. Markdown is a good format for pasting a Korean document into ChatGPT, Claude or another AI assistant for summarizing or translation, because the table structure stays readable.
Limits
- Images, charts and scanned pages contain no text, so nothing is extracted from them.
- Merged table cells appear in their top-left position, and the other cells they cover are left empty.
- Password-protected files cannot be read; remove the password in Hancom Office first.
- To keep the layout, fonts and images, use HWP to PDF instead.

Why is some text missing?
Text inside images or scanned pages is not stored as text in the file. Headers and footers are left out by default; turn on Include headers and footers to add them.
