How to use MP4 to MP3 Converter

  1. 1Drop your video into the box or click Choose a file. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and AVI all work.
  2. 2Check the length and audio format shown under the file name.
  3. 3Pick a quality: 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps (recommended) for most things, 320 kbps for music.
  4. 4Click Convert to MP3, wait for the progress bar, then play the preview and click Download MP3.

Which MP3 quality should I pick?

The number is the bitrate: how much data is used for each second of sound. 128 kbps is plenty for lectures, podcasts and voice notes and makes about 1 MB per minute. 192 kbps is the safe default for music videos and anything you will listen to on headphones, about 1.4 MB per minute. 320 kbps is the highest MP3 setting, about 2.4 MB per minute.

A higher setting can't add detail that isn't in the video. Most phone videos and online clips carry AAC audio at 96 to 160 kbps. If your file's audio is lower than the setting you picked, the tool tells you, so you don't make a bigger file for nothing.

Why this converter is different

Most online converters upload your video to a server, make you wait in a queue and cap free files at 100 MB or so. Here the conversion runs on your own computer or phone. There is no upload time, which matters most for big videos: a 2 GB screen recording starts converting the moment you drop it.

The tool reads only the audio track and skips the picture, so it is fast. A one-hour video usually converts in well under a minute on a laptop. You see real progress with a time estimate and you can cancel at any time.

Need a different format? Extract Audio from Video also saves M4A (without re-encoding when possible) and WAV for editing.

Tips for long and large videos

  • On a phone, very large files (over about 500 MB) can run out of browser memory. The tool warns you; a computer is more reliable for those.
  • Keep the tab open while it works. Your screen is kept awake on browsers that allow it.
  • If you only need part of the audio, cut the video first with Trim Video. Fast mode takes seconds and loses no quality.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The video is read and converted inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, which is why there is no upload wait and no size limit set by us.

Does it use FFmpeg?

Most of the time it uses your browser's built-in audio and video engine. For formats the browser can't handle, it uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (GPL, source linked at /tvid/FFMPEG-NOTICE.txt), a one-time download of about 10 MB that then stays in your browser cache.

Can I convert MOV, WebM or MKV to MP3?

Yes. Besides MP4 it accepts MOV (iPhone and Mac), M4V, WebM, MKV, AVI and 3GP. If the video has no sound track, the tool tells you right away.

Will the MP3 sound worse than the video?

MP3 is a lossy format, so the audio is re-encoded. At 192 or 320 kbps the difference from the original is very hard to hear. If you want the exact original sound, use Extract Audio from Video and choose M4A.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari and Chrome. Phones have less memory for a browser tab, so very long videos are more reliable on a computer.
