How to use Mute Video

  1. 1Drop your video into the box (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV).
  2. 2Check the estimated size of the silent video.
  3. 3Click Remove sound.
  4. 4Play the result to confirm it is silent, then download it.

Why remove the sound?

Background noise, private conversations, wind or music you don't have the rights to are common reasons. Muted clips also work well as background videos on websites and in presentations, where autoplay often requires the video to be silent anyway.

The tool removes the audio track completely rather than setting the volume to zero, so the file also gets a little smaller.

No re-encoding, no quality loss

Most online tools re-encode the whole video when they remove audio, which takes minutes and softens the picture. Here the video stream is copied byte for byte into a new file in the same format: an MP4 stays MP4 and a MOV stays MOV. A 2 GB video finishes in about the time it takes to copy the file.

Want to keep the sound and drop the picture instead? Use Extract Audio from Video. Want a smaller file too? Compress Video has a Remove sound switch.

Muting tips

  • Want silence for only part of the clip? Cut that part out first with Trim Video, then mute it.
  • Uploading the muted clip to social media? Many apps add their own music, so a silent file gives you a clean start.
  • Making a website background video? A muted, short MP4 also loads faster; pair it with Compress Video.

The output file ends in -muted so your original stays untouched.

Frequently asked questions

Does muting a video lower its quality?

No. The video stream is copied without changes; only the audio track is left out.

Does it use FFmpeg?

Most of the time it uses your browser's built-in audio and video engine. For formats the browser can't handle, it uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (GPL, source linked at /tvid/FFMPEG-NOTICE.txt), a one-time download of about 10 MB that then stays in your browser cache.

Is my video uploaded?

No, it is processed on your device.

Can I mute only part of a video?

Not with this tool; it removes the whole audio track. You can trim the video first with Trim Video.

Does it work on iPhone videos?

Yes. MOV files from iPhone are muted and saved as MOV.

Will the file be smaller after muting?

A little. The audio track usually takes 1 to 2 MB per minute, and that much is removed. For a much smaller file, use Compress Video.
